Why am I having the black screen issue on my PS5?
According to several user reports, the most common ‘symptoms’ are a black screen reloading after an update, a black screen after the PS logo shows up, and a PS5 white light with a black screen.

For most users, the problem was due to the PS5 output resolution being higher than what their TVs could handle, which is what caused the black screen to appear. To lower the output resolution, boot the PS5 in safe mode, go to ‘Change Video Output’, click on ‘Change Resolution’, and lower it.

How do I stop my PS5 from showing a black screen?
Since there might be several different causes for this issue, we’ll list the most common ones below, and how to fix them.
Issue 1: Changing the TV
We already mentioned this one above. Apparently, when you move the PlayStation from one TV to another, the console doesn’t automatically adjust to the TV resolution, which is why you’re having this issue. Follow the steps mentioned above to change the resolution and remove the blank screen.
Issue 2: Faulty HDMI cable
It may sound simple, and you might think you’d notice if the cable was broken, but it’s a bit more complicated. Cables are quite sensitive, and the smallest issue on the inside of the cable that can’t be seen from the outside can cause all types of issues, one of them being a black screen, even though everything seems fine.
Try switching the cable to a different one to make sure nothing is wrong with the HDMI cable.
Issue 3: The power cord
An even simpler issue, but also a common cause for the black screen. Unplug the power cable, and plug it back to make sure you have everything connected properly.
Issue 4: TV Power cable not connected properly
If you’re not using the TV too often and you’re in a guest room, make sure that everything is connected properly. It happens quite often for the power cord to not be put in all the way, which results in a black screen.
How to boot the PS5 in ‘Safe Mode’ to lower the resolution
- First, you need to power off the console. The yellow light means ‘Rest Mode’, and the green light means the console is ‘On’. No light will show up when the console is ‘Off’.
Note: To power off the console, press and hold the power button on the controller until you hear two beeps.
- After it’s been turned off, to put it in ‘Safe Mode’, is by turning it on, meaning pressing the power button, and holding it until you hear the second beep.
- Use your USB cable, since the wireless connection doesn’t work when ‘Safe Mode’ is activated. After connecting the USB cable, click on the PS button to boot the console into ‘Safe Mode’.
